The North of Peru
Most travelers who visit Peru are doing what we call the "Tour del Sur" (tour of the south) which usually includes
- Cusco and Machu Picchu
- Puno and Lake Titicaca
- Arequipa and Colca Canyon
- Ica, Huacachina Oasis and Paracas Reserve
- Lima
Now, there is absolutely nothing wrong with visiting Peru's south and these destinations are certainly worth a visit. However, some of these places have become quite touristy and also quite expensive. This makes the "Tour del Sur" less attractive for those travelers who are looking for a more unique and independent experience of Peru. Personally, I always liked to travel independently, without a pre-planned itinerary and certainly not in large groups.
If your style of travel is similar to mine, I suggest you take a look at the north of Peru. It may not be as touristically developed as the south (and thus might lack some of it's comfort) but it is certainly the road less traveled here in Peru, especially once you leave the coast and head east.
Interesting destinations in Peru's north include:
and many more! If you're into surfing you should definitely stop by the coastal cities of the north such as Mancora or Huanchaco.
